clean water and sanitation

The UN has made a list of their seventeen sustainable development goals. I find all of them extremely important, but number six caught my attention. I think that the most important goal is clean water and sanitation.

783 million people in the world do not have access to clean and safe water, that concludes to 1 out of every 5 deaths of children under 5 is due to a water-related disease. And every year, 3.5 million people die of waterborne illness.

It is possible to survive for various weeks without food, but it is not possible to survive more than a few days without water. Water is life. Diarrhea is the second largest cause of death among children under five. Lack of access to potable kills more children than AIDS and malaria.

Water is used for many important things like drinking, recreation, sanitation, hygiene and industry. Water is the most important source for humans and without it, waterborne illness will be a big problem. Therefor I mean more money and help should go to clean water in every country.

In just one day, more than 200 million hours of women’s time is consumed by collecting and transporting water for domestic use. In this useful time, the people should have had an another job and clean water in their home from the tap instead.

The situation of lack of sanitation is far worse, for it affects 2.6 billion people, or 40% of the global population.

On the other hand, proper sanitation is also deficient among many people in the globe. Lack or proper sanitation have mainly been characterized with worldwide shortfalls in indispensable access to a hygienic toilet, and deficient service provision and household standard. Poor people in many countries suffer from such low quality of services.

Women who gets menstruation have to be home from school because the bathrooms at school are destroyed or not available to use. this is not how it should be. Everybody has the right to get a safe and clean toilet and bathroom.

these points are so important. I think that many people in Norway are taking the clean water we get for granted and we have to lay a bigger focus on this point, to help others.

Measures are being made, as one of the goals is that within 2020, one should maintain and protect every water-related ecosystems, such as mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers and lakes.  This is an important goal for the future and a lots of people!

water is a start for everything.

water is the answer to do something more.

thoughts on Gran Torino

3. What are some of the challenges and pressures Thao and Sue have to deal with as second-generation immigrants?

Thao and Sue have to deal with Walts prejudices and the fact that he had been a solider in the Korea war. In the start he looked down on the Hmong people, and thought they could do anything they wanted because they have a reputation of beeing smart. He was an angry and a definite man.

4. What experiences does Walt have with living in a multicultural neighborhood? Use examples from the film and discuss to what extent Walt develops/changes through the movie.

Walt are experiencing looks from other peoples and he show and tell people to leave him alone. We can see that he is struggling with open up to new people and he have prejudices to new cultures.

project report about internasjonal day and ODW

Operation Day’s Work is Norway’s biggest solidarity campaign. Since 1964, Norwegian students have worked one day each year to give money and solidarity to fellow students around the world. This is operated by teenagers from all over the world.

My school in Norway, Fagerlia, are having one day off school which we use to help other lands, work for them and give them the money.  The money goes to help countries to make a better education.

Last year we helped Ukraina, on that ODW day I worked with my dad at his work, and earned 400kr and gave them to the people who needed it. This year, the project is about helping Nigeria. Nigeria has an extremely bad oil crisis. The air is dangerous to breathe in, the water is dirty and they can’t even grow vegetables or fruit. The few fishes that are swimming around in the water is polluted and are dangerous to eat. The students who are implementing this project are working to give 400kr to this people who are living under these circumstances.

I chose to be in the climate change- and the film room.  I chose the climate change room because I think this is an important topic and I wanted to learn more about it. In the preparation process I made a poster were different types of climate changes were in focus with drawings and text. Paulius and I walked around the school and posted posters on the walls and stickers with the “vi er alle olje barn” on doors and walls. When I came to the climate room I filled up water to the person who were supposed to talk about the topic. The person didn’t show up so my group didn´t have anything to do, which was very sad that we didnt get to meet the person or listen to her story. So we visited other rooms instead. For example the quiet room, here we were lying on the floor and the students played of a poscast. In this podcast a girl was talkning about important facts about the poor people and how lucky we are in Norway. The next room I was holding was the film room. We had chosen different movies to show for the other students that was visiting the room. The process was very easy to solve and I had very fun learning on this way. The day was very interesting and I got to know new people.

I think everybody learnt a lot trough this day, but I think that next year we have to inform the student more about the ODW before it is. I think we should have people on visit or someone from the student councils the week before the ODW and International day where they inform what the project are going to and what it is about.  I think that would make a bigger understanding and a bigger interesting for the day.

I learned more about the big crisis in the world and how important it is to help. Education is so important and all kind of people deserve it. I also learned how it is to work in the working life nowdays. I think that the class did a great job with all the work and the planning. I got to know a lot of new people and got a new point of view.

Syria

when i think about the word Syria. poor people comes to my mind. war and landmines. i think about all the organisations that helps Syria and all the terrible things that have happend there. i dont know so much about “the positive things” that have happend with the land, and that is very sad. Big wars and refuges comes to my mind when i hear the name of the land “Syria”

Niger Delta Blues

Through this song we got to hear that they protest the environmental devastation caused the oil industri in Niger Delta. There are no schools, medical clinics or social services. many villages are without electricity  and no clean drinking water.  There are big crisis with illness, weak and many poor people.

BANTU, who is writing this song are angry at the people that are not doing anything with the problems. Their women, their men, their children, the elderly and the weak are still  being murdered. And nobody are doing anything with it. He told us that they had learn the hard way and that  disaster-capitalism was invented only to protect its own.

Wadley

The story about the girl Wadley from Haiti made the greatest impression on me. She was an independent girl that didn’t take a no for a no. Wadley gave an inspirational impression on me when she stood up for her right to go to school and to have an education. In Wadleys story, her family didn’t have the money to pay for her to go to school after the earthquake but she doesn’t take a no for a no, so she went to school anyway. The teacher sent her straight home but she stood up and told the teacher “If you kick me out, I will come back every day until I can stay”. The teacher listened to her and let her stay.

“One girl with courage is a revolution” made a new impression on me after watching the film. In the movie “Girl rising” I saw many girls with a lot of courage and big dreams. I think that if you have a dream and a will to do something, you can accomplish everything you want to. These girls made a revolution with the changes they made for themselves and the people around them. I agree with this catchphrase, if you have enough courage, you can do anything. And what the girls do is a start of a revolution.

I find myself getting lost in the stories because they were told by the “I” perspective and in an emotional way. They show us the story very detailed and with videos of the whole story. It was interesting for me to see how much Wadley wanted to go to school. I think many people with an education available are taking it for granted, and this kind of woke me up about how important an education is.

I mean that the girls from the film are not directly victims. I can empathize to the girl’s stories and I can imagine what they are going through and what they feel. But I don’t think I can empathize that well, because I have never experienced something like these girls are living with every day. I sympathize for them a lot and I wish the best for them in the future.

I think that the strong message of the film is how many girls in the world are not getting any education or the offer to go to school. I wasn’t aware that the crisis was that big.  How girls are standing up for themselves and their gender is surprising!

When I saw the video from Nigeria I was shocked and felt bad for the people living there. I can’t imagine how terrible it has to be. I also feel bad for Norway being such a big part of the guilt of the oil crisis in Nigeria. The OD day is a very important day for the whole world.

Did climate change intensify hurricane?

Sunday afternoon the big hurricane (Harvey) blow over Texas and the cities around. This caused  that a lot of streams and rivers are in flood stage. For Texas this rainfall are beyond anything experienced before.

When i first heard about the storm i got really scared for my friends who are exchange students in Texas and the area around. This is an terrible accident, but I am so happy it just took a few lives! The last storm in Texas was so much bigger and dangerous,  I understand the people were afraid!

I agree with the points made in the article. Myself I think global warming had no effect on the storm. The world have experienced big storms almost like this before, so the point in the article am I agree with!
